In order to disable the USB hard drive in windows XP, follow the following steps:
1> Open the registry editor.
2> Expand the System under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
3> Click on Services under CurrentControlSet.
4> Click on UsbStor.
5> Double click on start and make the value 4.
Now, your XP operating system is not suppose to detect the USB hard drive.
